Kloster Eberbach is a historic monastery located in Eltville am Rhein, in the heart of the Rheingau region in Germany. Founded in the 12th century, it is one of the most significant and best-preserved Cistercian monasteries north of the Alps. Known for its impressive Romanesque and early Gothic architecture, Kloster Eberbach attracts visitors with its authentic monastic atmosphere, extensive vineyards, and rich history.

 

The monastery played a pivotal role in the history of winemaking in the region and continues to be renowned for its high-quality wines today. Visitors can partake in tours of the monastery, exploring the impressive church, chapter house, and cloisters, as well as enjoy wine tastings.

Somewhat hidden in the forests of the Rhine-Taunus Nature Park, Eberbach Monastery, founded in 1136, is one of the oldest Cistercian abbeys in Germany. In the Middle Ages, it was not only a spiritual and intellectual center, but also famous for its excellent wine. By exchanging and buying plots of land, the brothers of the order created a 37-hectare vineyard in a prime location – the Steinberg, where sought-after wines are still grown today. Today, Eberbach Monastery is a Hessian state winery and, with a total vineyard area of ​​250 hectares, one of the largest wineries in Germany. The monastery became very well known through the film „In the Name of the Rose“ – large parts of the film were shot within the monastery walls. Since then, thousands of visitors come every year to get a taste of the Middle Ages.

One of the most impressive monuments of medieval monastic architecture in Europe is undoubtedly the former Cistercian abbey of Eberbach Monastery, which was founded by Bernard of Clairvaux in 1136. The extensive complex with its Romanesque and early Gothic interiors became known to a worldwide audience a few years ago as the setting for the film adaptation of Umberto Eco’s „The Name of the Rose“. Furthermore, important scenes for the feature film „VISION – From the Life of Hildegard of Bingen“ were shot in Eberbach Monastery in November 2008.

But Eberbach owes its real global reputation to the monks who cultivated wine for over 700 years. In the Middle Ages, Eberbach Monastery operated the most flourishing wine trading company in the entire world. To this day, the twelve historic wine presses in the lay refectory bear witness to the enormous yields of the monastery’s cultivation areas. The Abbey Museum provides visitors with detailed information about the history of the abbey and the Cistercian Order.

The monastery grounds belonged to the state of Hesse until 1998. With the establishment of the Eberbach Monastery Foundation in 1998, the monastery became an independent legal entity. The mission of this foundation is to open the monastery complex to everyone and to maintain the complex through moderate use and sustainable management. In addition, it makes a variety of events possible together with the winery and the restaurant through its own event management.

Our refectory, the Klosterschänke, puts time and place onto your plate. WHERE FISH ARE VEGETABLES OF THE RIVER. In the monastery, they knew how to work, but also how to enjoy themselves. And the Cistercians showed this with their varied dishes, mostly from vegetables, grains and eggs. On fasting days, they liked to serve „vegetables of the river“, and sometimes their diet was complemented with poultry or game. At the end of the day, they cooked according to the modern fashion – regional, seasonal and with reduced amounts of meat. They were gardeners, anglers, hunters, winemakers and cooks. Their cuisine used what was found around the monastery – which, of course, included their own wine. True to this idea, we work with seasonal and regional produce – simple, fresh and plain. Our dishes are a melange of tradition and an innovative, modern form of food preparation.

Eberbach is a place of pilgrimage for wine lovers from all directions. The local wine brotherhood „Rheingauer Weinkonvent“ is dedicated to spreading knowledge about wine; cellar tastings in the Cabinet or Hospital cellar are offered by the Eberbach Monastery Foundation, and festive wine tastings are also held in the baroque refectory or in the lay dormitory from the early 13th century. There is also an outpost of the registry office of the town of Eltville am Rhein here. This has made the monastery a special place for weddings. Particularly attractive events at Eberbach Monastery are the wine auctions in spring and autumn, where rarities and unique items sometimes fetch five-figure prices, the wine sales fair in April, the „Glorious Days“ in November – a culinary festival with all kinds of cultural performances – and the Rheingau winegrowers‘ Thanksgiving on the first Sunday in December.
